BBC chairman apologises for 'mistake' in editing Trump speech in documentary

BBC chairman Samir Shah on Monday apologised for a 'judgmental error' in editing US President Donald Trump's speech in its 'Panorama' documentary. Earlier on Sunday, BBC director general Tim Davey and head of news Deborah Turnes resigned after admitting responsibility for the mistake.In a letter to British lawmakers today, Samir Shah wrote, 'The BBC has acknowledged that the editing of the documentary has caused confusion about Trump's speech.

We believe it should have been edited more carefully.'The BBC chairman said, 'The BBC reviewed this internally earlier this year. We should have taken formal action then.'According to Samir Shah, 'It is clear that the BBC must take a neutral position.' He added that the BBC is committed to restoring public trust and meeting the highest standards of journalistic integrity.Regarding the editing of Trump's speech, the BBC chairman said that after further reflection, the BBC has accepted that the editing "created the misleading impression of a direct call for violent action. The BBC apologises for that misjudgment."
