How many people have returned home to Syria in a year since Bashar's fall

The al-Assad family was in power in Syria for 54 years. The family's long rule ended with the fall of Bashar al-Assad on December 8 last year in the face of rebel attacks. Today marks the first anniversary of this historic event.

About 6.8 million Syrians, about one-third of the country's total population, left the country during the 14-year civil war. More than half of these refugees, about 3.7 million 4 thousand, took refuge in neighboring Turkey. About 840 thousand took refuge in Lebanon. About 672 thousand took refuge in Jordan.
Between 2012 and June 2025, about 705 thousand Syrian refugees took refuge in various countries of the European Union (EU).
Since a new chapter has now begun in Syria, millions of refugees and Syrian citizens who went abroad have started to return home.
Nearly 782,000 Syrians have returned from abroad in the year since Bashar's fall.
Nearly 1.8 million internally displaced people have returned to their villages or towns in the past year. Of these, 471,000 have returned to Aleppo, nearly 460,000 to Idlib, and 314,000 to Hama.
