The Trump administration is set to announce the next phase
of its Gaza peace plan.
WASHINGTON — The United States has launched the second
phase of President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan to
end the fighting between Israel and Hamas in Gaza,
which will focus on the enclave’s disarmament,
governance and reconstruction.
Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff made the announcement on
January 14.
The
plan includes establishing a peace board for Gaza and a
Palestinian
technocratic government to temporarily run the territory.
The
peace board would be made up of world leaders and would
have an executive board consisting of Trump adviser
Jared Kushner and Witkoff. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer
is considering whether to join the peace board,
and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair is expected
to join the executive board, a source said. About 100 people
were expected
to be involved, a U.S. official said.
The second phase of the
plan is being unveiled, despite
questions about the disarmament of Hamas in Gaza.
A person familiar with the matter said that there are currently
no serious discussions with Hamas about disarmament.
