The US Senate, the upper house of the US legislature, failed to pass a spending bill for the fifth time in a row on Monday. If this bill is passed, the US government will resume operations after the shutdown. The US Senate needs 60 votes to pass a spending bill. But due to the lack of votes, both Democrats and Republicans' proposals collapsed yesterday. Earlier yesterday, US President Donald Trump again threatened that if the Senate fails to pass the bill again, there will be mass layoffs of federal government employees. Thousands of employees have been working without pay for five days as the funds run out.

Democrats have been demanding that the healthcare sector be prioritized in the spending bill. Republicans, on the other hand, are pushing for a straightforward spending bill. Trump has indicated that he is interested in reaching an agreement with Democrats to overcome the impasse. Earlier yesterday, the Democrats' spending appropriations bill proposal was rejected by a vote of 45-50. Then, the Republican proposal was also rejected by a vote of 52-42. Immediately after the vote, Trump posted on social media. He blamed the Democrats for the ongoing government impasse. Trump wrote on his own social media account, Truth Social, "I am ready to work with the Democrats on their failed healthcare policy or anything else. But first, they must get the shutdown over. In fact, they should be up and running by tonight."

Democrats have been opposing the Republican spending bill from the beginning because it would further reduce healthcare for low-income Americans. Democrats have demanded that any spending bill must continue to provide health insurance subsidies for low-income people. The Trump administration's cuts to the Medicaid health program must be reversed and restored to their previous levels. Republicans have repeatedly accused Democrats of stalling the government to provide healthcare to illegal immigrants. However, Democratic leaders have denied this accusation. They have said that if the government reopens, they will work to resolve the healthcare issue through a separate bill. Yesterday, Donald Trump said in the Oval Office that he is currently discussing potential healthcare policies with Democrats.

However, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer denied Trump's claim. “This is not true,” he wrote in a post on X. Since the shutdown began last Wednesday, the White House has been warning that permanent layoffs of federal workers could soon be imminent. Press Secretary Carolyn Levitt gave the same warning yesterday. The US Office of Management and Budget has already started working with agencies that will need to lay off workers. “We don’t want anyone to lose their jobs. But unfortunately, if the shutdown continues, layoffs are inevitable,” said Carolyn Levitt. Levitt also called on Democrats to be flexible to break the deadlock. “There’s no more negotiation here. Just get the government moving.”
