Trump authorizes deployment of 300 National Guard members to Chicago

US President Donald Trump has authorized the deployment of 300 National Guard members to Chicago, Illinois, on the pretext of combating "unrestrained crime." Hours before the US president's move, immigration authorities said they had clashed with protesters in the Democratic-controlled city. Protesters drove their cars over law enforcement vehicles. A woman with a gun was shot. The Department of Homeland Security said the woman who was shot went to a local hospital on her own. However, her condition was not known.

Meanwhile, state and local leaders have been criticizing the plan to deploy troops to Chicago for weeks, calling it an abuse of power. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker said, “Trump is trying to create an artificial crisis.” Earlier, Trump also took action to deploy 200 National Guard troops to Portland, Oregon. But federal Judge Karin Immergut temporarily blocked it. She said Trump’s action was unconstitutional and a threat to state sovereignty. Assistant Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Trisha McLaughlin said in a statement that due to the protests in Chicago, “law enforcement officers were unable to move their vehicles. As a result, they were forced to get out of their vehicles. The driver of the vehicle that hit the law enforcement vehicle had a gun in his hand.” It is not yet clear whether any National Guard troops have arrived in Chicago. However, it seems that Trump's move will definitely face legal challenges.

Trump is trying to implement a controversial plan to deploy troops to Democratic-controlled cities. After Washington, Los Angeles, Memphis and Portland, the announcement of the deployment of troops to Chicago has come. The National Guard is usually deployed with the permission of the state governor. But the issue of deploying troops to various cities under the central government without the permission of the state has raised legal and constitutional questions. Protests against Trump's immigration policies are continuing to grow in Chicago. Several protests have occurred in front of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement office there.

White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said that local leaders like Chicago Governor Pritzker have not stepped up to quell the ongoing violent riots and chaos. In such a situation, President Trump has authorized the deployment of 300 National Guard troops to the city to protect federal government officials and government assets. He will not turn a blind eye to the chaos spreading in US cities. Trump has been threatening to send the military there for about a month, citing various crimes and shootings in Chicago. However, statistics show that violent crime in Chicago has decreased significantly in the past two years. According to the Council on Criminal Justice, homicides in the city from January to June of this year decreased by about a third compared to the same period last year. Although the overall crime rate in Chicago is higher than in many US cities.
