Indian-origin Democrat Ghazala Hashmi has been elected Virginia Lt. Governor. She defeated Republican John Reid to win the position. She is the first Muslim and the first South Asian U.S. senator elected from Virginia's 15th Senate district.
Ghazala's victory as Lt. Governor leaves her Senate seat vacant. A special election will be held to fill the seat. Ghazala Hashmi entered politics in 2019, when she was elected to the Virginia state legislature in an unprecedented victory over a Republican-held Senate seat. Five years later, Ghazala will become the chairwoman of the Senate Education and Health Committees, two of the Democrats' top priorities. Ghazala Hashmi, according to her website, is “dedicated to improving the lives of others,” focusing on issues such as housing, education, healthcare, and environmental justice.
