After drones, Turkey's Baykar is now developing small nuclear reactors

Turkish drone manufacturer Baykar is working on small modular nuclear reactor technology. This was announced by Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar to reporters on Wednesday.

The Turkish government plans to generate 10 to 15 percent of its electricity from a total of 12 conventional nuclear reactors by 2050.Bayraktar said Baykar is working on SMR technology. They are trying to build a 40-megawatt unit.The minister also said that Ankara is preparing a new draft law on nuclear technology, which will regulate the sector.

Private companies will be allowed to build prototypes after meeting certain conditions.Bayraktar also noted that the ministry has announced important incentives to encourage investment in this sector.

Baykar is one of Turkey's leading defense companies. Its flagship military drone, the Bayraktar TB2, has been exported to several countries. These drones have had a significant impact in the conflicts in Syria, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, and Libya.
