US has no intention of 'occupying' Greenland: Trump's new envoy
US President Donald Trump's newly appointed envoy to Greenland, Jeff Landry, has said the US has no intention of 'occupying' the island. But the US wants to 'start a dialogue' with the residents about the future of Greenland.
On Sunday, Trump announced that Jeff Landry, the former governor of Louisiana, will serve as the US special envoy to Greenland, despite his lack of diplomatic experience.
Following the announcement, Landry wrote to Trump in a post on social media, "It is an honor to serve you in this voluntary position to make Greenland part of the United States."
In response, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Premier Jens-Fredrik Nielsen said in a joint statement that Greenland will remain in the possession of the Greenlanders.
Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, has attracted US attention due to its strategic location and vast mineral resources.
Trump says the US needs Greenland for national security reasons, not for its mineral resources.
Trump's repeated desire to make Greenland and Canada—two countries and territories—part of the US territory has drawn widespread criticism.
